Sky Parra is a contemporary portrait and figuration painter based in Brisbane, Australia. Working predominately on a large scale and approaching panting as an action, Parra’s gestural application of paint documents the rise and fall of her sitters’ tone. Studying the complexities contained within a subject’s existence, the unfinished quality of her work portrays the human experience, our subjective and fleeting relationships. Painting in a naturalistic style to capture the inevitable irregular qualities of flesh, she employs slabs of colour in a series of very physical movements. Spanning from unstretched, raw canvas to extensive industrial walls, her practice loosely constitutes a site for existential enquiry, exploring the narratives of exchange. Exercising equal part observation and instinct, she ruptures the subject’s veneer of contained stillness through mark making.
